The 6th Wigan 10k saw more than 2,500 runners lining up on Market Street in Wigan Town Centre and set on their way once again by 10-year-old Jack Johnson. We had an absolutely brilliant morning with the sunshine making an appearance just as our finishers started to cross the line. Although we didn’t get record numbers, we felt like the atmosphere in the town centre was fantastic, the crowds were excellent and the runners seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves. Thank you so much to everyone who took part or came out to support the runners. Thanks also to the wonderful Pemberton Brass Band and the Panfire Steel Band for entertaining everyone along the way.
The 2018 winner, Liverpool Harrier Daniel Cliffe, was home in 31mins 51 secs, just 25 seconds outside the event’s official race record held by Daniel’s Harriers team mate Dejene Gezimu since 2016. Daniel missed out on a £100 bonus prize to break the record but still went home with a £100 cash, £100 voucher and a specially designed laser crystal trophy.
In second place was St Helens Sutton AC’s Thomas Griffiths in 32mins 44secs and third, the 2017 winner Joseph Monk from Preston Harriers in 32mins 56 secs.
First lady runner home was Wigan Phoenix’s Vicky Bryant in 40mins 02secs, followed by Bianca Pederson in the same time of 40mins 02secs and Jane Riley in third with a time of 41mins 17 seconds.
The sun was well and truly shining over our Family Mile runners by the afternoon. We had almost 500 registered runners taking part with lots of mum and dads, grannies and grandads joining the kids through Mesnes Park. With Andy Mack entertaining everyone along the route we have had some fantastic feedback from everyone involved.
Race organiser, Matt Johnson, who is also Jack’s uncle, said: “It was a fantastic turnout once again. Joining Jack and the Wigan 10k are so incredibly well supported by the Wigan public and running community that we can’t wait do it all again in 2019 when we will see our total number of participants top the 20,000 mark which is a fantastic achievement.”
The date has been sent for next year’s race, Sunday, September 1st, with registration already open, register for Wigan 10K 2019
